Our Geneva Museum Guide

Share the article

Geneva boasts an impressive number (and quality) of museums. No fewer than 40 private and public institutions allow visitors to immerse themselves in Swiss art, history and culture. The year is punctuated by museum seasons: in May, you’ll have the pleasure of discovering the Museum Night and the International Museum Day; in September, the Museum Season; and all year round, you can enjoy the permanent collections of the various museums free of charge, thanks to the Department of Culture!

So, what’s in store for your next weekend in Geneva?

For art lovers

Start your cultural tour with a visit to Geneva’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMCO), quite simply the largest in Switzerland dedicated to modern art of the last 40 years. With a mix of Swiss and international artists, the 4,000 works on display offer an insight into contemporary masterpieces.

At the Museum of Art and History, you can discover more traditional collections ranging from applied arts to fine arts and archaeology. It’s a real journey through time, spread over 5 floors. And why not take a lunch break in the museum’s restaurant on the magnificent terrace in the courtyard?

The Cabinet d’arts graphiques is one of the most important collections of works on paper in Europe. Here you will find drawings, prints and pastels. Note that this museum is only open during temporary exhibitions to protect the delicate nature of the works on display!

For science lovers

CERN, the world’s largest particle physics research centre, has been hosting an unusual exhibition for several years. Microcosm is a journey along the path of particles, from their source to the point of collision. In a fun and accessible way, you can browse through photos and experiments, and even meet the scientists who use these incredible machines.

For craft enthusiasts

When you pass by the Palais des Nations Unies, don’t miss the Ariana Museum, next door, dedicated to ceramics and glass. Thanks to these collections, the arts of fire will no longer be a mystery to you. What’s more, the museum is housed in a magnificent 19th-century palace, which will not spoil your visit.

But the museum that really catches the eye during a weekend in Geneva is the Patek Museum, dedicated to… watchmaking. A true Swiss speciality, watchmaking is the pride of the country. In this private museum, you’ll see some of the finest (and most expensive) watches in the world. From the first watch ever made to the most complicated timepiece ever created, these are unique examples of watchmaking that you can see for yourself!

And with the kids?

Don’t hesitate to visit the Natural History Museum – a must if you have children! You’ll learn about animals from all 5 continents in a fun way. Part of the 10,000m² is even dedicated to dinosaurs, often a favourite with young children. With guided tours and events on Wednesdays, there is something for everyone!
